Mary trotted eagerly after the woman in black. The uninvited
guest went straight into an empty bedroom and let out a scream, which terrified
young Mary. The sound of a window being opened hastily echoed through
the empty room - then a sickening thud was heard on the pavement outside.
"Mr Rumboldt! What has she done?" Mary shouted up to the drawing room. Rumboldt emerged, shaking slightly, then said, "Nothing; calm down." Mary hurried down the stairs, yanked open the front door |
